Default Workbench Ideas

What do you guys use for work benches? Im trying to find an inexpensive way to setup my garage. I just got rid of some couches and stuff from there so I have lotsa room and want to get some counter space. What do you guys use? build your own? turn a door sideway? actually have a workbench? desk? show me your setup.

They look similar to what I got...I got some Gorilla Rack shelves from Costco. I think they were 50-60 bucks a piece. You could stack them high or split them in half for the workbench height.

Got them at Lowes. I don't remember what I paid, but it wasn't much. They're actually sold as one tall set of shelves, but they can be configured as two shorter side by side units (like I did).

Went to Lowes.com and found them.

Not bad. And they still have shelves to put stuff onto. I like that idea a lot.

Made my own. 2x6 stringers, 2x12's for the deck, 4x4 legs, 1/2" carriage bolts. I also routed out a 1/2" deep area and inlayed a 1/2" thick steel plate (about 2' x 2') that was drilled and tapped to accept my large Wilton vise on the corner of the workbench. It has worked out very well.

My workbench is a surplus table from a factory (still has Levi Strauss & Co painted on the bottom). Got it at a surplus furniture store for $20. It's metal with a hard plastic top. Doesn't like being welded on but it's big and holds lots of stuff.

The tables in my office also came from surplus stores. No real good reason to buy new unless you're building a bling-bling garage.

i have an old countertop in my garage that I got from a friends house when he was remodeling his kitchen. only problem is I didnt get the sink (he threw it out before I got over there for some reason) so there's a hole in it! lol. but it works very good and nothing harms the formica top so cleanups are easy and doesnt stain/soak up like wood does. I also have a big work top on one side that is made from 2x4 for deck surface, 2.6 for legs, and 3/4" plywood for top surface.
if you get a shelf like the one in the link, make sure it doesnt have press board for a top like my shelf like that came with. its fine for what Im using it for (basemtent shelf space)but oil will break down the pressboard and it'll fall apart, and dont even think of bolting a vise to that stuff. it'd be pretty cheap to replace the top boards with some 3/4" plywood cut to same size as the wood it comes with.
