Default mild to stainless

Can I weld mild steel to 304 stainless steel?

Yes, use 309L filler and you'll be fine.

Yep, you will need some stainless wire as well. Also, if you want the best results you may want to get a tank of C-3 or tri-mix gas.

I'm going to try to weld some exhaust tubing and I'll be using a stick welder. I know its not going to be the best looking weld but its all i have. Can I use 304 stainless stick, and where can I buy these at? Thanks

304 will probably crack. You should always go up a grade or two in alloy for dissimilar metals, and with adding mild to the mix you have to be concerned with the mixed properties of all three metals.

309 is the right one to use when welding dissimlar steels when at least one is stainless, but it's hard to find, I almost never can and usually end up using 308/308L.

I'd love to find some 309LSi and some 409TSi, since they'd be just the deal for the typical stuff used for exhaust and headers and the Si wires flow out really nicely, even with plain old C25 making for pretty welds and saving time over TIGing
