Default Welding SS tubing

Do you need to shield the inside of the pipe or is there a way to weld it without shielding inside?

if you don't shield it you will get corosion from the inside.....you can use a chill ring and i don't believe you need to shield(with gas) it then because it blocks the atmosphere from getting to the weld...i'm sure someone here has more ss pipe welding experience than me, but i do know that some type of shielding to block exposure to air is required to keep the backside from corroding....

You usually purge it with Argon. Block, or tape one end shut. Tape the other end, then make a slit with a razor blade in it for your purge line. Keep the purge on the entire time you're welding, and a few minuites after.

There is a product called Solar Flux you can pick up at a welding supply shop. It takes the place of back purging the SS that your welding. I've never used the stuff before but it suppose to work.

I just setup a backpurge with about $10 worth of components from ace. Works great.

the only time we ever use back purging at the shop i work at is if the part is a high stress component like a thin wall turbo header. on our production turbo kit header...which is thick wall...we have never back purged and have not had an issue. im not saying that it is a bad idea by any means but IMO it would depend on what your doing
