Default Arc Welder for tack welding

How well a job will a arc welder do at tacking 16g-18g stainless steel pipe?

Anything i should look for? this is going to tbe for tacking only.

The only time I tack with an arc is in the field when a mig isnt accessible. Dont know why you would be using stainless rod vs. running stainless wire. Thats a total no brainer. Unless you dont have a mig and are just tacking up to finish off with tig. In that case you are going to be running so low an amperage with the arc that its going to be rough. Figure a 3/32" or even 1/16" rod. Amperage is going to be very low to not blow through that kinda tube. Not the right use of the machine.

can you recomend a inexpensive mig that i can use for tacking?

i have a guy who does amazing tig work but i have to get it formed and tacked myself.

There are a couple of recent threads that talk about mig welders. If you dont plan on doing anything bigger than 3/16", you can get into a variety of migs in the 150 amp range for $400-$500. If you can EVER see yourself doing some heavier work, go ahead and shop around for a well taken care of 220 unit with 200 amps+ (provided that you have available 220 power)
