Default Fluxcore welders - Anyone ever converted one for gas?

I'm debating whether or not I should convert my fluxcore welder to use gas or not. Has anyone ever converted one over and did it work OK? I have the conversion parts for my Lincoln but, am thinking of getting a seperate TIG/Stick welder so I can weld basically any type of metal with gas and still have a portable machine that I don't need gas for to weld mild with(stick).

Anyone want to buy a slightly used Lincoln Mig Pack 100 with conversion for gas and aluminum?

What do ya think?

John

The gas conversion is the best thing you'll ever do to that welder. If you have the parts, go for it. You'll not be disappointed.....

Alright, well I think I'm going to convert it. I've had the parts for a while I was just unsure if I really wanted to convert over or not. I think I will buy two extra gun/cables so I can have one setup for any situation.

Thanks guys

I would have to agree with everyone here, Id convert if you have the stuff. With the gas, the weld is much cleaner and smoother and it pops a whole lot less. You can tell when the gas isnt on because one day I forgot to open up the bottle and noticed it instantly. LOL

Hey XLR8NSS, I'm in the same situation as you. I have the Lincoln Mig Pack 100 also, and I'm hesitant to invest in the conversion kit, since I don't weld all that much. If you decide to go with the gas, let me know how you like it.

like the others have said, the conversion makes it so much nicer.

The first time i welded was with a 100 mig pack, and flux core.... got decent penetration, but the weld was very nasty looking, and lots of popping.

Since then, my friend had converted it to the gas, with argon/something else mix, and i used it again, seemed like a different machine, my welds make me look like i knew what i was doing.

Ryan.

Will do felton. I think I'm going to put the conversion stuff together later tonight and get a bottle this weekend or early next week.

I don't weld a whole lot either but, I want to weld some stainless and aluminum so I need to use the conversion kit.

Don't bother with the second gun...you'll only ever go back to flux core if you run out of gas one night....otherwise, you'll wonder how you got along without it!!!!

The only advantage flux core has is for welding outside in windy conditions; but I've never needed to weld anything yet that wouldn't fit inside my garage.

I think that the flux core gets better penetration on thicker welding, but I really like the gas too. I'll get a Tig soon and learn to make those "perty" welds!
