Default Search Limitations?!?

Almost every other thread in the new owners forum has someone telling someone else to use the search. But I did a search and then after I found what I needed with that search I tried to do another (well over 30 seconds later) and I got the prompt saying I cant search twice in 30 seconds, but I wasnt trying to.

Just as long as it doesn't interfere with how much the site can handle? Only reason I can think of why they would limit it.

Bingo. AFAIK the search function is processed by the server, which is why you are limited. Every 15 seconds would be nice though, since the search function is somewhat limited and it takes a few tries to get what you're looking for. That or find a better search engine.

For security reasons. A hacker will use a method called hammering that will send requests to the php engine and eventually the server will run out of memory and crash. This is a type of denial of service attack. I would think that their servers could handle 15 seconds appart though so my vote is for 15sec searches.

I have run into this limit sometimes in my searches. I vote for 15sec also.

Also, Justin, I totally didn't think about that, but the DOS attack is a very plausible reason(to some). To have to wait 15 seconds would still deny that approach.

Well someone that is serious about a DOS attack will just take control of several IPs or spoof the outgoing packets and hit it all at one time. So the limit on the searches is kind of pointless but I guess it will keep a few people newbie (known as script kiddies) people out. Working in network security for a large corp, I can tell you that there are several other ways around this but limiting the search is the easiest and the cheapest.
