only about half of the threads i post in does it actually subscribe them to me, even though i checked the box in the options menu of the CP.

Not to hijack, but are you getting email notifications from the half that are subscribed threads? I haven't got an email in about 5 weeks now for any subscribed threads. Instant is checked in the User CP.
