give me an example of a search term that's timing out for you and I'll look into it

Searching for things that general will probably time you out. Try searching for something like "header comparisons"

cerebrex nailed it -- your searches are WAY too vague. The more targeted your search, the better the results.

I did a search for stock+fuel+system in only the forced induction forum and it's timed out every time I've tried it in the last couple weeks. It seems the search times out rather quickly.

It should give you 60 seconds... I just ran that search, and it came up with a 503 error for me as well. I'm on it

Brains,
I'm wondering if there is some sort of common denominator as to why search goes on the blink so frequently. Although the failure of search is frustrating, I'm not complaining. I'm sure that this must drive you nuts more than anyone else in the world!

Is the search engine part of the VBulletin Software? Do they have any tech support for this kind of thing?

All my best,

Steve

the vBulletin folks basically leave the "big boys" to themselves, since we're not their bread and butter. They really don't have a ton of experience in running sites of our size Soooo, solutions are much our own. Every large site (2M+ posts) starts to rely more on the community than the company I'm afraid.

Are you guys running the stock code-behind? What kind of database are you using? If you are running a MySQL database you might look at the indexing as MySQL seems to have some trouble with timeouts on high read/write applications running extremely slow query times.
