I see what he's saying. I would think something along the lines of deleting accounts that haven't been signed on to or "active" for let's say 6 months, 1 yr? I bet that would clear out ALOT of spots/screen names.
I know there are a lot of people that sign on, read, but don't post. I don't think he meant delete those people.

we have zero reason to do this. I'm guessing someone else had a username registered that you wanted. That isn't a good enough reason, sorry.
Here is another hint, sites with higher registration counts can also be seen as more desirable to advertisers. Even though we have over 100K registered, we actually see about 80K unique visitors per day.

Delete those members and that nice and high rank might fall. On the internet it's all about statistics, and if you make a site where people can make an account, that will basically monitor your success.
high user rate (unique) + paying advertisers = Bank for owners.
This information may be dated since I stopped making websites. =\
