That popping feeling...
Well my car is at around 130k miles now and the rear end is starting to pop when going around corners. I'm thinking it's the posi unit taking a dump. What are my options? Is it better to have it rebuilt or should I just swap out the whole rear end for a used lower mileage 3.42 posi 3 channel rear? I am also entertaining the idea of buying that 4.11 rear end for sale up north, but I am really short on cash now.

4.11's are pretty steep for an auto car
Especially in a v6 car. No offense but the slight lil gain in performance your gonna get is not gonna be worth the decrease in gas mileage and the SCREAMING v6 at highway cruising speeds lol. These factors wouldn't be worth it to me because at the end of the day the car is still going to be, well, slow.

How can I tell by just looking at it? Huge chunks missing?? I have a spare replacement 3.42 ring and pinion (who would have thought?? ) in good shape. I thought usually the torsen units go out, especially when it pops when going around corners. I also noticed after going to the drag strips that there was a lot more burned rubber on the right side of the car than on the left. Almost nothing on the left but a lot on the right.

The 10 bolt has a torsen carrier, and yes it is when the gears inside are bad it pops, remember that's exactly what was happening on my car, then rear end went completely and we spent 8 hours in the drive way installing the rear end, sorry new gear oil isn't going to fix it, your cover may end up looking like mine did lee. This is exactly what happened with mine so I say replace now and be done with it.

my bad 7.5 not 8.5 yah i didnt kno the v6 had a torsen in that case change the carrier.shows u how much i cared about the 10 bolt..i tossed that in the trash without ever even attempting to open it..and as long as the ring and pinion u have are a pair from the manufacturer u can change that aswell..but u cant mix match ring and pinions even if they are the same ratios. and you probably have a 2 series carrier right now and the 3.42's wont fit unless u get a 3 series
So back to my question... Rebuild, or swap in a used one? I don't know anything about rebuilding rear ends other than swapping axles and backing plates.. If I should go rebuild, how much is that going to cost me and how the heck can I do it??

I have an ABS non-TCS rear with a Zexel-Torsen positraction unit and 3.42 gears - and it came like that from the factory way up in Canada (eh?). It is the exact same as what would come in a 6 speed car... RPO codes GU6/G80. It was included with the Y87 option package.
