Default DMV Fee's for registering an out of state vehicle here

Are there any hidden costs to registering an out of state vehicle here in California?

The website calculator says it will be about $500 for a $5,000 dollar vehicle, but i dont trust them very much.

So who has bought or knows of someone that registered an out of state car here and what extra fees that they had to pay?

Thanks Guys.

sounds about right 9% tax they charge you on the price of the vehicle and then if it's tags are expired you have to pay the late fees for some one elses f* up. and then you got all the other bs fees.

so there is no real big fee just because the car is out of state? someone told me there is and maybe some extra costly inspections.

ya i usually try to put a low price on there, i am just wanting to make sure that there will not be like a stupid $400 dollar fee to have it inspected and maybe some other dumb tax that cali can come up with on top of the other regular fees.

Should be just registration fees , smog check and inspection by dmv person. If you just bought the car out of state then you have to pay sales tax if you didn't pay sales tax in the state you bought it from. If the sales tax in that state is lower than the county you reside in now, you will have to pay the difference in sales tax plus smog, registration and inspection by the dmv. Make sure you have the title as well or finance documents with you. Last time I bought a car from auction out of state the bill of sale was no good to the dmv.

If your military, and not a resident of Cali, then you should have a form that you can get from your command stating that your not a Cali resident and the tax and registration fee will be greatly reduced. Nevada is the same way, and since i'm military, i paid $33, instead of $438 for my wife's new honda. No matter what that's all i'll ever pay here, plus smog...
