Default Can you build an engine? Chime in please..

Ok i was spraying a 125 wet shot and the tranny hung up in the second to third shift and the motor has a pretty loud tick/knocking sound coming from the front passenger side valve cover.

The motor only has about 20k miles on a fresh rebuild so most of the engine including the head's should be fine. But im thinking a rod is bad or something like that.

Im located in Visalia and need to get this fixed ASAP!! It's my only car and i use it for work soo if your a shop owner or know someone who own's a shop or if you work in a shop please chime in.

If its coming from the valve cover you may have bent a pushrod. I assume they were replaced in the rebuild but were they replaced with hardened ones?. Stock rockers or aftermarket?

did you hit the limiter??
either a pushrod or you crack a piston ringland
and since you were on spray i would say a ringland

pull the valve cover and take a look at your pushrods/rockers/springs
if those are ok then try to find a one of those camaras that you can stick down in a spark plug hole (i forgot the name of it) and take a look at the pistons

Pull the valve covers and inspect all the pushrods, rockers, and springs. If it turns out to be a spun bearing, it might be cheaper to buy a whole new short block then rebuild the damaged one. You could upgrade while you are at it and pick up a 6.0 LQ4/LQ9/LS2 short block while you are at it...

Pulled the valve cover today and all the rocker's and pushrod's look just fine...It's smoking blue smoke out the catback also but i doesnt sound like a rod it sounds like a ring now.

I disconnected the injector plug on the front passenger side cylinder and the ticking sound went away so what do you guy's think ring?

its your ringland pretty common in these motors when you spray them incorrectly
stop driving it now and you could possibly fix it for cheap

i myself had a ringland go and i pulled the motor and just replaced that piston, though it is very not much recommened

probably your best bet is to do a forged rebuild with some good pistons and rods

You know i think if the tranny would have shifted right it would have been fine ive ran 50+ bottles through this engine since the complete rebuild which was 19k miles ago.

Yea sounds like a ringland, an easy fix would be to pick up an LQ4 shortblock. You can pick them up for around $600 I think than put all of your parts on it. Only downside is that its an iron block and weighs about 70 lbs. more but you wont notice it. If you wanna just get it going for cheap put a 5.3 shortblock in it for the time being.

when i weighed a bare lq iron block it was a little over 90 lbs heavier than a bare ls1...
but it looks like the op has a lt based engine anyways..
i would start with a compression check to find the problematic cylinder, and do a leakdown to get a better idea of the issue before you start taking it apart.

yeah, don't be the idiot i was i paid 3400 to have the ls1 rebuilt 3 weeks after buying her had low oil pressure but needle was reading fine and that took a large amount of her build budget right off top. if i would have been smart i could have sourced a lq4,lq9 for like block for a couple hundred and around here i can get um. and fitted up a nice h/c/i, and forged bottom end. but i wanted to keep her like that cuz she all numbers matching right now and wasn't thinking i could store the motor till later time to rebuild. but the good thing about it was i have a stockish ls1 that has less than 17k on her and makes a true factory rated 350hp and outruns some modded ls1 cuz they have like 117k on the whole drivetrain, oh rear got rebuilt too, trans still shifts hard stock (a4) untouched except for service.
