Question California friendly, shorty header street cam?

I'm looking for a cam with overlap in the -4 to -9 degree range that will work good with stock heads and shorty headers, this is my DD and normally see's 2-4k rpm and a couple time a day see's 6k. I'm not looking for a completely stealth cam, Id like to hear it a little bit.

FYI, I'm aware of the "CheaTR" - 214/230 .601/.575 117 LSA cam, but I'd like something less stealthy/with more cam sound.
Thanks!

Thumbs up

Yeah, I posted there also.
I figured it wouldn't hurt to post in my home state.

ive heard that a 224 cam is the largest you can go and still pass the sniffer. thats what i run but ive never had it "smogged" so i cant truthfully say it will pass the sniffer. but with the cutout open you definitely know my car has a cam.

Could be wrong, but I think Ryne was able to tune a 228 cam to pass....

I have passed the sniffer with a 217/220 cam, stock manifolds and stock cats. Talk to whoever is going to tune it, and see what they would recommend as the tuning is the key thing on whether it will pass or not.

I had Geoff order a 222/230 114 +4 cam with -2 overlap. Passed smog no problem on my LS3 2001SS. Very quite valvetrain with those ESP lobes as well. Nice little lope to it. Lots of torque.

You might consider givening him a call and ask what he thinks.

This guy put down some great numbers for a mild cam through shorties and stock cats.

My TR224 on a 114 LSA passed...

Tad, the tuner at Haddad, told me he has passed bigger cams.

I used to run my 5.0 down to empty, then put 2 gallons of ethanol in then drive to the smog shop...I believe you can pass almost anything like that - only 15% of normal emissions. Just dont try to hammer it with that fuel. Should be really easy now that you can get e85 anywhere...
