Default 160k Miles, want to cam it.. rebuild or new engine better?

So my car is at around 160k miles and It's paid off now and finally got extra money to finish the engine (suspension is more or less down now). But what is my best bet reliability wise and still have power? Possible costs? I would be doing most of the work myself.

Just stick a cam in it with supporting mods (pushrods, springs, oil pump, new chain), it has a rear and front seal leak as well.

Or get a Iron block 6.0/6.2 and a cam and stick that in instead?

Im not worried about smog ~ Ive been running long tubes, e-cutout, 3" exhaust with no cats for years now.

Thanks for all your inputs !

Dont worry about the miles. If the oil has been changed regularly and it runs good, mod it. There are plenty of modded high mileage ls1's on the board. I remember seeing a 220k+ Camaro on craigslist about a while back that was still being beat on and taken to the strip. I would only change the block in interest of more power due to the larger cubes.

228r and some CBM ported 243 heads would be a nice easy combo.

What do the CBM ported 243 heads run? What about the cam/supporting mods do you have a place you recommend to get it all from?

Texas Speed, Thunder Racing, or even CMS or CBM could supply you with a cam and supporting mods. They are all LS1tech sponsors. Here is CBM's contact info. Didn't see a separate section for cylinder heads, but the last time I checked, they do sell them: http://www.cbmmotorsports.com/Pages/contact_us.html

Might as well freshen up the engine while its out. Wouldn't want to hear that you spun a bearing after doing the mods.

Rebuild kits w/stock pistons are about what, $800? Plus labor.

Id have no hesitation throwing a cam in there as long as you dont spin the thing to the moon. Or you could always just buy my car with half the miles and it already has the cam/supporting mods and tune done.

Since when are people pulling motors to do cam swaps?

If your oil pressure is good and you've kept up on the maintenance, you'll be perfectly fine. people spray these motors with 200k on them.

like lee said , throw a 228 in it and maybe some heads if you can afford it , if the motor goes later, you can always pick up a 6.0 for 800-1k from just about anywhere, and honestly with 6.0 being soo cheap, i see no reason to do a rebuild, unless of coarse you plan on going forged

I did all my motor work around 130-140K and everything work out fine. If the motor has been good to you thus far it should be fine afterwards as well.
