They used to have those setup in irvine all the time. I was working as a tech at a Toyota dealership at the time and drove thru one on a test drive in a customers car. They wanted to smog it, I was non-complaint and they let me go.

I have not been unfortunate enough to go through one of those yet. If they flag you over, it the smog check mandatory?
Within the last week, somewhere on either the 405 or the 9, there were 3 cars all pulled over in the very same area, three tow trucks, and yep, you guessed it, 2 or 3 CHP's. Makes me wonder if that's what they were pulled over for.

I don't know if the rules have changed, but in the past it was to "collect data" and participation was "voluntary". Take it for what its worth.

you guys are so worried about getting these random smog tests, how do you beat them in the first place when registering the vehicle? I'll be moving out there soon and have these issues of a modified car hah

Youre not worried when you know people that take care of it for you for the modified cars....just different when its on the spot with the good ole chp there to issue a ref check. I would never wanna be put in that situation

It pays to have out-of-state plates.

Put the car back to stock for smog check, do it all over again 2 years later.

No the mobile checks are not mandatory. From what I have heard, they will write your license plate down if you do not volunteer. Not sure what happens after that though.

We had one of these up in Nor Cal a few weeks ago. From the information I was given, no one on our Subaru forum got checked or failed. (I own a WRX and drive it as my daily.)
