Unhappy officially moving to california -- INSPECTION?!?

hey guys, i did a co-op out in southern cali and they want me back full time come september, however my car will NOT pass inspections haha. I think i'll be in southern california but that COULD change. do any of you know any shops that just plug in and give yo uthe sticker? I can't have any shops looking under the car cause then I surely won't pass! thanks for any info

When you register the vehicle, you will be required to smog it. Smog, for our age cars, is every 2 years.

No stickers.

If you can keep it registered in your home state (former address, parent's, etc.) that would be your best way around it, yet it is not "legal". California encourages people to rat you out.

Don't take my word for it, check the DMV's website and stay educated: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/newvehicle.htm

so they don't give stickers for smog or inspections? I'm trying to figure out if i register it there, if its possible to get around it anyway, if anyone knows?

I think the only way to stay regsitered back in NY would be to drive back and get the inspection every year?! I can inspect it/register it right before I come to california and be good for a year I suppose, but after that idk what i'm going to do, i can't de-mod it, break my heart haha

Californian's ratting out other Californian's, no way hahaha. when i first got here i got a ticket for smoking a cigaret at the beach. some guy near me went and got a cop to write me a ticket. did you know they just passed a law saying its a $1,000 fine if you 1) throw a frizbe or any type of ball (hard or soft) at the beach. 2) bring you dog to the beach 3) dig a hole at the beach deeper than 18" 4) smoke a cigarette on the beach. have fun living in cali i know i do.
p.s. i would keep your car registered in your current state. just make sure your not riden around all dirty because the cops here love to pull over out of state plates just to "see" who you are & what your doing. on a bright note if your an illegal you can get a drivers license in cali.... i have 4 hahaha

You'll have to get your car smog than you'll have to get new plates and registration. All the time that I've smog my cars, they never looked under 'em. they told me as long it has the egr and other needed legal stuff, all is good as long as it passes the sniffer.

Good luck dude, Cali seems to be raising the Smog laws every 2 years. Correct me if im wrong but Cali does two test, smog and ODB2 readiness test. The smog test consist of putting your car on the sniffer and the ODB2 test is just a plug in test that checks the "readiness" of 5 or 6 test(cats, 02 sensors, air pump, ect...). Your best bet is to 1)get a set of cats that would burn up the unburned gasses from your exhaust and 2) Invest in a tuning software package such as Hp Tuners or Efi Live to "manipulate" the readiness test. Or 3) find a guy that can hook you up with your smog ;-). What ever route you take its not going to be cheap.

Best of luck
Michael

I already have everything tuned to appear as ready so that's not an issue. Its just any visual checks or smog checks, thanks though!

It shouldn't be a problem finding a smog station that won't care what mods you have. Problem is passing smog without cat just won't happen. Your best chance is to put the cats on and lean out the tune a bit just for the test.

That should work, but you would really need to trust the person. Sucks for me though because I am a California resident, so I get stuck either way. Haha... I just registered my car in a county that doesn't require smog. I have had enough with this smog crap. I still smog my Mustang though.

With your mods, all you'd need to do to make it easily pass is throw on a stock 00-02 exhaust, and put AIR and EGR back on, for the inspection. Not like it's cammed or blown...

Up here in norcal that's the going rate.... To many smog shops getting closed down for over looking things and passing ppl. so that makes the price go up and harder fines for smog shops.

and who needs the lub then when there smog shop gets closed down???
