Default 79 z28 project build, need tons of help

Ive never done a build in my life, My mom gave me this car for my 21st bday and ive had it sitting for the past 6yrs. Ive finally got myself a house and a decent job and makin decent money so im ready to get this thing on the road again. Basically, im looking for website and books or anything to help me get on track to basically re doing this whole car. My goal is to finish with a nice clean car pushing around 500-600hp on the motor.

How much are you looking to spend? What are you capable of doing yourself vs farming out to a shop? Are you looking to do a resto-mod with an LS powertrain?

Are you determined to use this car as a platform? For the money it's going to take to reach your desired power level, you might consider a more collectable platform in case you ever need to recoup your investment.

A 600 hp motor is going to require a beefed up transmission and rear end if you ever intend to use it near it's true potential. You're talking about a lot of money.

My advice... start with simple, inexpensive, manageable projects like carpet, upholstery, audio, etc and build confidence and experience with that first. Save your money and do your research.

Simple and easy. Nobody knows what condition its in so who knows how much money your looking at simply to get it into a "clean" stance.

Also one persons definition of "clean" might not be what you think is clean.

600HP is possible but on a motor alone your looking at around 10K (VERY rough estimate)

The body is straight only 1 small dent, i dont believe it will need much body work which i will take it to a shop to have done and then paint at some point. The motor is a 355 with a rv cam from what i was told when i bought it and it supposedly has flat top pistons and thats about it. Its an az car so i dont think there is any rust unless i find some suprises. The car has been in my family since new so i plan on keeping it until i pass away so im not worried about re sale value. I just need help on where are good places to order carpet and all interior pieces and then also if anyone knows good shops in az or places i can ship my heads to do the motor work as far as heads and cam and boring it and all that. I dont plan on doing this build in a few months just gonna work at it over a long period of time so ill be saving up money as i go.

Take no offense but have you driven something with as much power as you are looking for? It would be a HUGE difference from how it performs now

Classic Industries and year one are great places to get parts. npd is also a great place (national parts depot).

no i havent driven anything pushing that much power but how do you learn until you have it right? If i can get the motor to puch 450 id probably be happy then after that maybe go procharger or possibly even nitrous as a last resort if i wanted to get to that 600hp range.

What do you guys think a 79 camaro with 450hp would run in the quarter? Id buy good suspension and good tires as well i know thats a must if you want to get the car down the track well.

I think you would be happy at the 350-400 fwhp range.

Lots of people want 500+ hp range but can't handle it or its way more then they ever expected/need.

I ran 13.80's at 104 at Pomona (back in the day when they had street legal days one weekend a month) in a 78 with a backyard rebuilt 350. Had too much gear (4.56s) and too much cam (I don't remember the specs but I figured bigger was better being a foolish teen lol) and maybe 9 to 1 compression .

Do research before you buy, don't waste your money like I did
