I thought we already had them since 01 or 02.

I think it records the last 10 or 20 seconds of vehicle information such as speed, rpm, brakes being applied and a few other things.

Big brother wants more power!
I believe this might be against some american rights. I have no doubt the Obama administration would want to make your black box files open for the public to view. I.E. insurance companies, government agencies.

The senate passed a bill in March that calls for mandatory black boxes in all 2015 vehicles.
The bill gives the government the right to access the black box for a number of circumstances, court order, consent of owner, investigaton or inspection.
(I wonder who determines what inspection means?)
Car and driver also did a good write up on this.

Truth.... There are MANY manufactures who already did it voluntarily, to void warranties, etc. years ago. This mandate states they must be in every model.

Yes, cars do have black boxes. The new boxes in 2015 however will monitor speed, driving habits, locations visited, distants traveled, number and weight of passengers and 15 other stats. These are not just 20 seconds before an accident recorders.

If you think this is a partisan initiative, it is time to wake up. The battle is not red vs blue. It is people vs corrupt power.
