star applys to vehicles 2000 and newer. pre 2000 will be given sniffer and obd 1 or 2 checks. 2000 and newer no sniffer just obd2 check and visual.

i had to get a star smog check and they checked the OBDII and sniffer test. I dont know how much bs this guy was telling me but because the k&n fipk has the AIR pump to a seperate filter than the stock air box and filter it would not be CARB legal anymore based off of their new standards. Again this guy still passed me, however he said some may not have because of the AIR pump. I think it was all bs.

A lot it is going to depend on your smog guy and how picky they are. I know two different smog guys and they both have different ways of doing cars. One of them still does the whole smog check and sniffer on new cars.

Under the STAR program, the smog tech can sniff or not for 2K & up cars, totally up to his discretion.

I just smogged my dd. It said go to star station. I played dumb and went to a test only station and all went through the dmv just normally. Maybe they were star certified but the station had no advertising as such. I think you only have to go to a star station if it says star only.

Ill find out agagin when I smog my truck this summer

Star stations HAVE to have star station posted. Just read it under DMV smog laws. And they aren't supposed to do Sniffer. The whole reasoning Carb enacted this was so that it would be cheaper for the consumer. So I don't see how it would be up to smoggers discretion. Defeats the whole purpose.

The sniffer test is at the discretion of the smog tech, and so stated in the EPA rules for STAR stations.

And the STAR program was temporarily discontinued until everybody gets together on what the readings should be on the factory computers.

So most stations are doing it the same old way.

Lol no ****? I was worried about my long tubes. I guess I'll just tune it and run it through smog. It will probably pass with an E85 tune

That is JUST the info I needed! My car is not passing due to some " cannot complete OBD2 check for mil/check engine light". No codes present and I have driven it for at least 100 miles and am clueless at this point. It's good to know a renct test passed with these mods! Thanks for posting that!!
