Failed CA Smog - no EO # on cat?
Hi, I'm hoping somebody can explain this for me. California smog question.
Bought car used (2003 model year) from dealer about 2 years ago, so just now having to smog it for the first time. It failed for not having any markings on the cat. They said it will need to be replaced with a "new style" cat. Did I get screwed by the dealer? How did it pass 2 years ago when they sold it to me? Did they put the wrong cat on it? What should I do?

Was this at a "smog repair" shop?
Did you look for yourself to see if it actually doesn't have an EO? What "new style" cat are they referring to, 50 state?
If it really doesn't all you have to do is find a shop that's less ****... I've never had a smog tech look at my cats even if I'm at an unfriendly shop.

I had a very similar thing happen with my sons 2004 chevy cav. he had smogged at a Gm dealership and their smog guy said the numbers on his cat. converter were wrong. So they told my son he needed a new cat. converter to pass. FYI, my understanding is if the numbers are missing, wrong, not readable you fail. I'd get the car up on a lift and carefully clean the surface of the converter and hopefully you'll find the numbers if you do then What you need to do is take it to a smog referee he can cross reference the numbers and probably get you set straight. Now if you can't find any numbers even after carefully cleaning the converter then you're S.O.L. and you'll need to get a new converter.
