i have Edelbrock shorties, all shorties have to come with the smog adapters and a CARB number in order to be legal. As far as gains i cant say for sure, i did all my echaust at once, that alone on a completely stock car gained like 15hp, but i noticed a big difference when i went from a paper filter to a K&N FIPK set up. like another 25-30 hp from that.

Your gains from Shorties vs. LTs are going to be really minimal... not too much bang for your buck.. might be better off going a diff. route... my reccomendation is finding a smog shop that will "work with you" =-)

Are you smoking crack? I just took off a set of JBA shortie headers w/stock y-pipe and just went to a Kooks 1 3/4" LT and off-road catless y-pipe and a SSRA and picked up almost 6/10th's of a second. And that was on the first and only pass, short shifting the car. Mind you, there was no additional tuning done either. This set up has made a tremendous difference for me and I consider it the best bang for the buck for me so far.

Also you clearly werent paying attention to the thread.. w/ your LONG TUBES and ORY............... He's asking about cali smog laws... Long Tubes and No Cats = Insta-fail in cali
What I'm trying to say is that if you're trying to stay smog legal, there might be some better ways to spend you money.....
and no,there is no crack smoking going on here.......

Short tube headers gain 8 - 12 hp on the LS1 according to one manufacturer.
Here's why there is so little gain (from a borrowed picture):

The LS1 exhaust manifold is pretty efficient to begin with so short tubes aren't going to benefit a lot.

I would think that for about the same money and effort you could port match the stock manifolds, then extrude hone them. You might pick up the same small gains you get from shorties, and nobody doing a smog inspection would care because they are stock manifolds. They would also fit like they're supposed to, and be super durable.

Went from log style factory manifolds that had been ported to JBA's. No seat of pants diff, only a dyno would tell..IMO, every little bit helps, so I run them. Dont have to worry about smog ***** either!

'99 Z28 with JBAs, noticed a big difference with the JBAs, that was before the LS6 intake, Ported TB, and UD pulley. I noticed a bigger gain from the shorties than the Intake,TB, and pulley combined. JBAs FTW!! (in Cali anways, on a stock cam) Get some shorties and have some pipes made to replace your cats, just bolt your cats back in at smog time.
