Default Anyone know how they choose test-only smog

So does anyone know how the DMV decides if you do test-only or any smog shop? Just got my notice today, and I gotta go to test only which sucks cuz I was gonnna have it done at my work, but I don't think it's a gold shield station. I gotta check.

I don't think anyone knows for sure but the general consensus is its either due to failing a previous smog test or the car being older.

In order to comply with state law, the California Department of Consumer Affairs/Bureau of Automotive Repair (DCA/BAR) directs a portion of the vehicles registered in Enhanced Smog Check Areas to Test-Only stations. Enhanced Areas are those parts of the state with "serious," "severe," or "extreme" ozone pollution problems.

yeah and you qualify for the lucky 2% by having a car that is on a list of cars to be known to to usaually be upgraded and therefore not pass smog, i.e. states thinking fro the test only centers

I think its mostly random. Got picked once with my old car. I'm praying that they won't send me to a test-only with my T/A when its due.

i have gotten test only for everycar i own. I have never failed a test either so i don't know whats up. I live up here in victorville so its not like we have some nasty smog or anything. I have my Trans Am and a 98 protege. It just sucks cause im paying extra for the government.
