my parents just got a house and it has a heater for the pool , i try to turn it on but it won't heat up the pool, you hear it working but then it turns off. i know its not the time to use the heater but i still want to know how to turn it on!

I'm not a pool expert but isn't there is some type of flow or pressure switch required for the heater to keep running. Works as a safety device, in the event the pump was to fail or stop running.

Blocked filter just throwing that out there.

you need to make sure first that your pool filter is turned on and water is flowing, how old is the unit? new ones will automatically direct flow to the heater using electric valves, but if its an older unit u have to manually direct the flow into the heating unit.

the one at my parents house was already pre-wired and all gigital... it had a temp thermostat on/off switch

its a newer unit... i take off the cover of it and it shows you how to start it and i do everything it tells me to do and it turns on for about 1 min then it shuts off like theres a timer on it... im going to have to take a picture of the unit and post it up, its our 1st time using a heater

i turn it on and it sounds like its working for about a min then it shuts off

make sure the temp is set, it might be clicking off because its hitting the set temp already

you have the heater bypass valves closed, and the heater in and out valves open??? The piping that goes to the heater, should have an inlet and an outlet, each with a valve. Then there should be a pipe that goes between the 2 of them, (sort of looking like an H pipe with a valve in it). You need to make sure the "H pipe" valve is throttled WAY down or shut off, and that the inlet and outlet valves to the heater are open. Open the inlet about 1/2 way and the outlet all the way. This will let water flow into the heater, but not so much flow that it doesnt heat the water at all. its shutting off because its heating the little bit of water in the heater, then shutting off since it doesnt have any room to circulate.
