Default Gto 17x4 spare tire for skinnies on F-body?

Anyone runnning this setup on a camaro. Think they would look good w/ a set of black weld Prostars, or a similiar 5 spoke design. Or even a 17x11 or 9.5 Zr1 wheel. Also, they have a bunch of the warning crap stamped on the wheel. I think if u sanded them down, and maybe polishing them would look great w/ a chrome or polished Zr1. And for some of them, the price is right. Just change the tires to some M&H 17's for the strip.

Negative. People have tried it and track officials aren't retarded. Just buy a proper wheel. Gotta pay to play.

i've heard of it being done, also heard the weight savings isn't that great for the price. especially after you buy 17" tires for them, when you can pick up a front set of welds for like $300 used.

There shouldn't be a issue if the rim is safe enough to issue as a spare from the dealer. As long as the lettering is removed & you have the proper tire it shouldn't matter.

Have you ever read a spare tire? It says DO NOT EXCEED 55MPH (or 60, depends on the spare).

They also say, TEMPORARY USE ONLY.

"Space saver" spares are good for short distances and low speed, not 120+mph sprints and then slam on the brakes.

Just get a proper wheel.

Thumbs down

Good greif . . . . . . what has the world come to . . . using spare tire rims ( i see you mention changing tires . . ) to go drag racing, with speeds exceeding 100 mph . . .

So you want to place YOUR life . . . and the other driver's life at risk and run temporary rims at a drag race?

I see a Darwin award coming . . . .

The arguement for these previously on other boards/threads was that the wheel itself was a structurally sound piece to withstand 100+ mph speeds as long as you change the tires to a M&H or similar front runner type tire. I personally wouldn't do it, unless I found out from the manufacturer of the wheel that its durable at those speeds. But 'Trust' is right, most track officials will see the writing on the spokes and veto it at tech in. Some folks have gone to the trouble to grind down the text, and repaint them. If it were me I'd rather spend the money/effort on cheaper track legal front wheel and a true front runner. Probably the same weight with a lightweight track oriented front tire. To each his/her own though

its not an money issue. Just seen it at the track and was curious. Plus its different. Not the same old weld, or bogart wheel.

Most drag wheels are not for road use anyway....

Its the tire itself that is not designed for speeds above 55mph, not the rim. However, like others said, I would just get a set of normal front runners. They are designed to withstand high speeds and will be much lighter than the GTO spares.

my buddy used them...nothing special and are still pretty heavy. but you HAVE to put a good skinny tire on them, else they will blow out. you may or may not be stopped by tech.

I agree with most of the negative comments. I'll add the bolt pattern is incorrect placing additional stress on some of the studs due to misalignment. You'll also have a higher probability of the lugs loosening due to the mismatched bolt pattern.

I think there are much safer alternatives which can easily be purchased at minimal costs maximizing gains. No sense in trying to reinvent the wheel so they say.

I def. can agree w/ most everyones arguments. Just thought it would be a nice match to a set of Zr1s and still have the advantage in weight coming from the smaller wheel and a lighter drag front runner. I never stated running these w/ the stock spare tire! Thats just stupid. Although I have seen it. But the rim itself in my mind and others would be plenty strong. As for the bolt pattern, I auto X my 99Z28 for an entire year on BMW wheels which also was the wrong pattern and would lossen up according to many members. Well guess what, they didn't.

Either way, this was just a thought and wanted to see whether or not someone actually had them on an F-body, more so a camaro. I've seen them on GTO's and vettes, but not one f-body. Thanks for all ur comments guys.
