Default skinny wheels with wide tires?

I want to know if I can "get away" with this combo:

I have a pair of 17x8.5 wheels, and I want to install a set of M/T 295/45/17 tires. According to Summit, the recomended wheel width for these tires is 9.5" to 11".

If I use this combo, am I asking for a disaster?

Street tires thats way to small for that tire, drag radials or slicks might flex to fit it but I would say thats pretty big for that wheel still.

problems i see is that sumitomo is already pushing it beacuse biggest that should go on a 9.5 is 285 anything more wont wear properly and it wont lay all the traction equally..

also can be dangerous, on fast turns u might loose your tire.

I would never do this with street tires. I thought since DR's are softer, it might work out.

I'm really starting to have second thoughts about it. I might end up getting some 275 BFG's. Those are authorized on an 8.5" wheel.
