Default Favorite Drag Radial for Street? (I searched)

Before I get annihilated, yes I searched, lol.

My BFG's are practically slicks now, and before I got another pair I was just wondering what everyone's favorite DR is while their on the street.

There aren't any easily accessible tracks around here, so it'll be strictly for street use. The MT's are insane, and would probably rip my rear end out and in the rain forget about it, so those are probably out.. My BFG's did well, but since I had the car I never had full tread on them, so I don't know how they feel brand new. I've heard the nitto's are most streetable, but that they suck too. And now we have the new Toyo Proxes drag radials out, so now I'm just very undecided lol.

Basically, I need a DR that can handle my power, but also keep me alive if the car is out in the rain. Obviously regardless of what DR i'm using I need to be careful in crappy weather. Quick question too, are drag radials still safe if I'm barreling down the highway, as in, turns and stuff?

Thanks everyone!

ive had nitto 555r drag radial tires on my z28 for lil longer then a half year. and absolutely love them. there cheap, they hook up good on the streets, for drag radials there good in the rain. but i mean come on who goes out racing in the rain.. but other then that as long as you have tread your be fine. the wear on them are so so... i havent had any other kind of drag radial tire but ive heard they last the longest compared to other drag radial tires..

so go with the nitto 555r drag radial

i have had both the MT on the BFG and overall the BFG was a better tire. I blew my stock 10 bolt on a BFG. they hook well at the track. right now i have the mt and other than it hooks like crazy on the street/track i dont have the freedom of drive when i might get wet... those tires dont like the rain..lol

Nitto DRs are only mediocre as a DRAG race tire, but are an excellent STREET tire for powerful cars. Also, they are actually not too bad in the rain with decent tread remaining. Of course, caution and driving within their limits is generally assumed. Some guys even get multiple years/several thousand miles out of them, obviously without rotating them.
I ran 17" 315 Nitto DRs on my DD C4, at only 24-25 PSI on the street/highway, with excellent results. Took off/on-ramps at 70MPH, and when new they performed like a 'normal' tire in LIGHT rain. They still couldn't completely tame the car at my 8th mile strip, but ran them on a roadcourse with no stability or heat issues.
They are a little heavy, and a few sizes run slightly smaller than spec'd, but for the money they are tough to beat.

How about the Nitto 555RII ? Seems like an updated version with more cornering capability.

Also I'm guessing regular "Ultra High performance" tires wouldn't be too great on our cars?

Edit: Nvm, the 555RII's are $214 lol. I'll probably get the 285/40-17 Nitto's, those'll fit fine on a stock WS6 wheel right? If only my wheels stuck out a little more

The nitto NT555-R has my vote. they are a bad-*** street tire. not bad at the track for moderate power either.

Thanks, yeah I'm probably gonna go with a 285 instead of 275 since their said to run small. Now I wonder if it would be easier to have them shipped to my house or to get them at a local tire place. Hooray for incompetent workers!

Ive had the 555r, MT, and hoosier DR's. the nitto hooked the best on the street but the hoosier was the best at the track. If you go with the nitto's be careful if you get cool nights. When the temperature drops below about 60 deg they lose traction fast

I've had my BFGs since new and I love 'em. They hook good everywhere. My car with a single stage 200 shot didn't even chirp the tires from a 2nd gear roll and at the track I don't even bother heating them up.

What I can tell you pound for pound for handling power is a M/T ET Street radial.

I just got a ride finally in a friend's car that makes about 410 rwhp cam only m6 qand 4.10's and then put on a 100 shot Harris Speed works kit. He recently bought a 275/50-15 (28" tall) DR on 15 x 8 Weld Draglites.

He took me out for a few Nitrous Blast and the tires w/o any burnout and has about 25 psi in them never spun from a 30 mph role. He had a little spin from a dead stop but thats to be expect w/o burnout and a little lower on the PSI.

I have owned BFG's, Nitto's and M/T and I ended up getting Nitto's, they do alright handling power but can certainly spin on my car which makes like 390 and w/o the bottle but is only 26" tall and smaller sidewall.

The only issue is wear and M/T do wear faster and I am hoping for 3-4 seasons on the Nittos, if I go to the track, the car will be packing a Bias Ply.

The big issue I see is the power your making but the driveline that doesnt support it. I think you should be really focusing on that, and then a M/T should go on. But with $$$ I know how it can go.

A Nitto should be sufficent give what you have to work with.

This question has been covered millions of times. You can't have both. There is no tire out there that will hook hard on the street, corner well, and be fine in the rain. You can't have both. Get another set of wheels to put good tires on if the car is your DD.

It's not really a DD, it's more of a, go for a ride if it's nice out car. The BFG's did fine in the rain, I was able to blast down the highway no problem with them, and launches were pretty good from what I remember. I even drove on them several times in 40 degree weather. I just don't want to get, for example nitto's, be barreling down the highway and next thing I know the rear end of the car loses traction. I'm sure there are some good performance tires out there as far as handling and cornering goes, but then launches would probably suck on them.

I bought the car with these BFG's, and it has performance tires on the front. Other than those I really don't know much about the different tires out there, which is why I'm looking towards you guys for some help. The car will never get to a track around here. Strictly for street

315 Nittos are perfectly fine on a 9.5" wheel. Actually their site lists recommended rim width of 9-11".

I liked my Nittos. Got great life, hooked decent in warm weather, and hell, I broke my first 10 bolt on a 315 nitto.

I'm actually torn between a 315 nitto or a 275 Toyo TQ right now. Don't know which one to try.

i was just on the nitto site and it recommends a 10.5in-12.5in wheel for the 315/35/17 NT555r. they 9-11in was recommended on the 275/40/17. im not saying it wont work, im just saying what it says on nittotire.com.
