Default Smallest front tire width for good handling?

I currently have 275's on the front of my car. It catches grooves in the road and wanders because of the tires' width. I like how the car handles with them, but the wandering drives me nuts. I'd like to downsize to eliminate the wandering, but I don't want to sacrifice handling performance. I was thinking 255's might do the trick, but I'm not sure. Any advice?

I just put 245/45's on the front's. Maybe a little smaller but handles awesome. Looks good too and I have the same size/type of wheel you do. I got Firestone Firehawks. Stole two of them off of Craigslist for $100/piece. I had worn out 255/40's on the front and there is no comparison to the handling now. It's amazing.

you could try a different tire, they track differently in grooves depending on construction. I don't know any brands off the top of my head, but there have been discussions.

I also run a 245 on my front stock wheels. Same reason, got tired of it tracking me all over the damn place on these shitty oklahoma roads. Once I swapped the 245 on its much better.

I have a new set of 18's comming in & will be buying 245's for them as well on the fronts.

I wouldn't go narrower than a 245, but you will notice a difference going from 275 to 255. It will make it feel a little sharper when turning.

1. my boss told me that if you get staggered wheels that will help the "wandering", ex get like 315's in the back and keep the 275's up front and that will help the car not wander off so much...

2. my other boss told me for handleing purposes that say you have 17X9 wheel that calls for a 275 40 17, if you put a tire on there that is a lil narrower then the rim and kinda has to expand the tire in order to seat on the rim, that, that helps in cornering, but i dont know how true both of these are, i work at discount and they do a whole ride and drive thing... but that is something to look into, me myself would never do that cause i thihnk it looks like complete **** and will not sacrafice looks for the car wandering... IMO

Correct, putting a tire on a wider (Tire manufacture recommended wheel width) wheel helps with handling, but it can decrease the ride quality. On the other hand, some performance (regardless of size) are just a lot worse the other tires at tracking road imperfections.
