Tire Noise

Tire Noise
I am looking at getting another new set of tires and I would like to understand a little more about tire design. I am wondering what exactly causes tire noise? All tires have a tread design and they seem to vary sooooo much. Is it the angle of the cuts in the design, the amount of cuts, the hardness of the rubber? All of the above? I must have a quiet tire because I drive a lot and want as much understanding as I can get to make a better educated choice. Thank You.

Based on my experience, I find that directional tires are more likely to be noisy than either non-directional or asymetrical tires. Even still when tires are rotated at proper intervals. With non-directional and asymetrical tires, when rotated properly, the wear characteristics are turned around. This keeps the tread flat, thus no noise. Also would say, try to keep away from tires with large tread blocks. Ever here a truck with Mud Terrains or Super Swappers on it driving down the road? Part of that has to do with the amount of tread depth and type of rubber used also, but those high void/large tread blocks make alot of noise.

Yes it seems that whenever I buy a set of tires about half way thru they start making a lot of noise. I have BF Goodrich now and they are as loud as my radio, yes they are directional. I want to know so I can make a more informed decision. Thanx for the reply.
