Default Skinny that can run on the street occasionally?

Looking to put new tires on my turd and I was wondering what I should be considering for a skinny that will see occasional street use? 15" rim.

Car will be just over 3000 lbs race weight. Do I need to go with the M/T 8 ply at this weight, or would a regular one work?

Thanks.

I run the M/T sportsman SR's all summer long on the street. 15x4.5's on front and M/T drag radials out back. they stick great and handle like a full size tire out front.

I'd rather spend a lil more for a tire rated for high speed. I've seen pics of blown out skinny's and I don't wanna risk being that guy!

If your gonna run 15x4s on the street there is gonna be some risk imo no matter what tire you run,

I'm in the same boat. I'm putting a set of 15" Weld RTS wheels on my '00 SS and drive the car everyday when the weather's nice. I've looked at the M/T sportsman SR radial and they're not rated as high as the Kumho or some of the other cheaper tires out there, as far as load capacity. I certainly don't want to put a cheap tire on this car and run the risk of a blowout, but it would appear to me that the M/T radial isn't as well suited for duty on one of these cars as some of the other, cheaper brands. Anyone have any other ideas?

I just put the MT sportsman s/r radial on some weld rt-s wheels. They are made to run on the street...the primiary use is for street rods. You would have no problem running them on the street all the time. Hell I ran some Hoosier front runners for quite a while and never had a issue.

I run Kuhmo Power Stars, 165/80's and Nittos on my daily driven CETA, It behaves just fine. It is even acceptable around town in the rain. On the Highway in the rain I would be very cautious. But the skinny fronts work just fine for me.

We run plain ole cheap 165r15 or 165/80/15 radials. Kumho or whatever we can get. My buddies have ran 5.20s at over 140 in the 1/8 on these tires. Not street cars but I don't see you doing any more harm on the street than they see at the track.

Figure your average 4th Gen F-body will carry between 1800-2000 lbs on the front tires. If your tires are not rated for that amount of weight, your are probably asking for trouble. Sustained highway driving will build more heat than a short 1/4 mile pass.

Make sure you find a wheel that is designed for street use. Weld RTS wheels are perfect for a street strip vehicle. I run 8ply sportsman fronts on my street car and love them.

I've had Bias Ply and Radials on the back and notice no real difference with the Sportsman fronts.

+1 for the sportsman 8 ply. I ran those with M/T ET drag 17 ws6s on the back. The radials performed great with the sportsman 8 plys and never looked like it was hanging low on the front. I will be getting some new ones soon as the fronts I had were the Jegstars and stuck out too far imho. Getting prostars this time!

I ran the street legal Mickey Thompson Sportsman skinnies and never had a problem with them on my old daily driver.
