^This.

Your front tires do your turning and braking, why do you want less grip for this on the street? The only time that you should want smaller front tires is going straight down a drag strip. Yes larger tires create more rolling resistance, but a near stock width 285/40R18 tire is good balance for the street with a 305/30R18 rear. Too narrow on the front with too wide in the rear will create a lot of understeer. Only a 20mm (less than an inch) difference in front/rear widths should have a good handling balance, depending on your suspension/sway bar setup.

Nitto 555's are not known for grip at all, they are just street tires, only the 555R or 555RII's are the grippy tires.

i've always liked the sumitomos for street driving, they do not grip well, but little road noise, and soft ride

I see where your coming from OP. I don't think you meant to say you WANT less grip, more so that your assuming with a cheaper tire your automatically going to have a less sticky tire (this is most of the time true). I would say Nitto 555's are a good choice for up front, but it really depends on what your doing with the car. If your doing a lot of racing on the street or overall more concerned with drag racing you can get away with something a little less grippy up front. Like someone stated previously Sumitomo's are generally a cheap tire that don't have much grip but may be suitable for front wheel duty.

I've got (older) 555s on mine right now and they arent too bad. It looks like the price difference now between the 555s and 05s are enough where it wouldnt make sense to buy the 05s. although prices im looking at are for 275s not 315s

I ran NT05s on all four corners for a couple months, 275 all round. They were great.

Any R888 owners in here?

ET streets May go back to NT05s or try the R888s next. The ET Streets were great, but I like on-ramps too much.
