Default anybody ever hear of a tire failing for going higher than the speed rating?

in my quest for tire searches, the street slick i like the most is rated at 130.........no my car makes about 500 to the wheels, and can do 170+........so what would happen if i went 170 with tires that are rated at 130? i know its a stupid question, but please serious answers only........

The tire will either shred or explode because of the heat. H rated compounds aren't built for high speed. Curious as to which tire you are looking at?

well im running 4 17" 9.5 inch zr1s from oewheels.........because 11s are just too wide for me.....so i got these zr1s with intentions of running a 295 40 17 out back, but the closest thing i found was Mickey street drags which were 295 45 17s, and decided on Nitto NT555RII 275 40 17s for the front, which are rated at 168.....id love to get as close to 200 as possible, and i havent run it with spray yet, and theres a piece of road out here that is hardly traveled, and i think i could get close......lets not talk about mechanics, strictly tires........and im not goona find anything thats 275 width and rated any higher than 168......these are the mickeys

this car is sunny day only btw

A 295/45/17 is a 27" tall tire and a 275/40/17 is 26" tall. I like to try and stay close in height for ABS reasons and looks too.

As far as 200mph you'll be fine running any tire with a V rating or better. I've gone 170mph on my 275/40/17 BF Goodrich G Force KDWS tires with no problems.

yea thats exactly my issue, to get technical its a 1.4" difference, which will def mess with my abs right? its a 4 channel and id like it to stay that way.....obviosuly the rear tires are goona be the hardest to find, and i finally found the mickeys......so now i gotta try to find front tires that will match height wise to the rears......having no luck other than the nittos, and cant find any 275 45s.....maybe ill try 285s later

I like MT's for drag racing but I would not consider them a high speed road tire.

Going thru the traps and then immediately lifting off and shuting down is a lot different than holding your foot to the floor and wailing speeds above 150+

Get yourself some nice Z rated tires.

I would agree I wouldn't want to run MTs up to those speeds for an extended period of time. They are made from a very soft compound and will wear out faster at those kinds of speeds.

I would trust any tires with an Z, W, or Y rating.

You need to get another set of wheels for drag racing
and then a 2nd set for road racing.

Having a nice tall soft sidewall is great for dr
but not for high speed road handling.

BTW try driving at 150 first and then worry about going 170
it's a huge difference and takes a lot more than just raw hp
from a 150 shot of nos to do it.

Also don't go by the Speedo it's not that accurate at those speeds

the only reason why i want the MTs, is because i can not for the life of me find any 295 tire on a 17" rim........sure as hell aint finding a 295 40 which i woulda liked, but a 295 45 i can handle.....the car is only a sunny day car, and im just looking for tires for it.....i understand that every now and then i wanna go 140+, so if you guys are saying the MTs arent the best for that, then please make suggesitions on tires that will fit......i may have to go down to 285 but would prefer not too

I used to run my bike CBR 1000 against other bikes and exotics like Ferraris, Porsches, ect and would hold speeds of 120-160+ for 7 to 10 minutes open road twistie highway runs in Mexico so just saying

running out the speedo and holding it there for any length of real time is a big difference. things happen so fast at that speed and you are just tunnel visioning as things are blipping past you. off ramps can even start to look like actual sweeping turns.

I even had a switch to turn off the tail lights...that would freak out anyone following who tried to ride your line or follow you thru the road.

yea i looked and you know what? maybe a 285 is the way to go.....i mean it wont look as cool, but it will be much safer and there are quite a few to choose from, and they can be the same height as the fronts meaning ASR and ABS are here to stay

I haven't heard of anything like that but idk most of the time people drive normal speeds so who knows.. Z tires are the way to go though.
