Depending what tire you run you CAN get away with it, but it's still not optimal..even 7.5 really isn't enough. The problem is the 6.5" pushes the tire even further out, causing it to rub on the fender lip when you hit bumps and launch hard, cutting into the tire, possibly causing a failure and accident. A 7.5 will tuck the tire under the fender a little better.

It might help but probably not depending on how far the tire gets pushed out.

As long as you're close to stock height, you'll be fine. I was in the same boat, found a pretty decent deal on some 6.5 BS rears and figured I'd give it a shot. They work for a track wheel, although I think the 7.5 looks better. But, as often as I go to the track, it's no big deal to me. The up side of the 6.5 BS, at least for me, was I could fit 28x11.5's without ANY pounding or modification to the quarter/wheelwell, and with stock springs/hose mod I have had zero issues rubbing or cutting the tire, even with some street miles on less than perfect roads. The tread of the tire comes out about even with the outside edge of the quarter panel on a Camaro, leaving the sidewall out in the air. I've been told the quarters stick out a little more on the Birds, so if that's true it probably wouldn't look that bad. Here's a pick with 27x11.5's, don't think I have any pics with the 28's.
