Default How to strip chrome off wheels?

My set of Firehawk wheels are starting to peel really bad. I was going to get another set of wheels but I really like the Firehawk wheels.

I figure I will have to find a place to do it, but whats the process of removing the chrome plating to bare aluminum? Is it even possible without destroying the aluminum?

After the chrome is removed I will sand/polish the aluminum.

Thanks.

J

From what I read, for chrome removal, the proper way is the use of conductive process and then the process of removing the nickel is through using muriatic acid.

There should be a chrome shop available around your area capable of doing this kind of job. I know I found a couple here in England.

Muriatic acid will also eat the aluminium wheels. If you go that route make sure you was the excess acid off often and with lots of water.

I use muriatic acid alot at work for cleaning the masons brick work lol,imo having a shop do this might be a better option,i would shop around because it might be cheaper to just buy new wheels, just be careful if you use muriatic,i get sprayed with that crap all the time, but my boss decided it would be a good idea to dump 5 gall, to try and clean out some pipes, they had to evacuate the building lol,

your best bet is to buy some painted firehawk rims and then have them chromed.

Any powder coat shop can media blast it off.

I also use muriatic acid at work and that stuff is no joke, it will eat straight through marble/glass. I would not advise putting it on wheels.

Do you know what type of media they used to strip the chrome off? Did it damage the aluminum?

I'm thinking about trying to find a set of painted Firehawk wheels and strip them. I think that would be easier than having the chrome stripped off.
