Default Best cornering, and straight line tire

Ok here's the deal I have been trying to search like crazy with no luck on finding the info I need! I have a 2002 ws6 trans am 6 speed and it's time for tires on all 4 corners and I'm looking for the best handling tire for cornering and also straight line grip. Cost isn't that much of a concern I just want the best performing tires!

Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's get my vote. Amazing tires, I wish I could have afforded another set last year when I had to replace them.

Tires that are made to do well on corners usually have the stiff walls while the tires to hook on straight line have soft walls.

Goodyear GS-D3 are the absolute best tires I have ever owned, perhaps only matched by the Michelin Pilot Sports I had on my '95 Porsche. I have 15,000 miles on my Goodyear GS-D3 set at this point and there is plenty of tread left with no tramlining, road noise, or cupping. You do have to be vigilant about psi though so that the tires don't wear prematurely, which can happen if under-inflated. The grip in the rain is amazing and I live in a very mountainous, twisty road area. I handled the 'Tail of the Dragon' like it was my 911. I can't say enough about these tires after 17 years of F-body ownership. Expensive?? Yes, and worth every penny. Best of luck!!
Photos on 'Tail of the Dragon'. Amazing grip! Enlarge the pictures as much as possible and you can see the tread design.

Another vote for GSD3's. They do as advertised!!!

I wish they would make more sizes.

I was also wondering about the nitto 555r2 I don't care about treadwear as I highly doubt this car will get even 2000 miles a summer put on it. Just overall plain out best tire and rain isn't that much of a concern either

I really can't say enough about the GSD3 tires. Simply confidence inspiring awesome-ness with a kick *** looking tread too.

If your looking for a tire that really grips an R compound tire is gonna grip alot better then any regular street tire like a gsd3, nto5, etc. Tons of people on stang and vette forums love the toyo r888 and i have seen a few that like the 555r2 so since you dont care about treadwear both of those tires are good choices

I absolutely love my R888's in the rear, and plan to put them on the front as well. I put my 305/30/19s on at the end of fall last year, and supposedly they work really well after a couple good heat cycles, so I'm excited to see how well they work this spring summer.

What size do you want? 275/40/17?

I would suggest you go on tire rack, type in 275/40/17 and start researching that way.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSe...tpackage=false

the GS-D3 and the Pilot Sport PS2 are the best true street tires and will run $1200+ a set.
You've also got the Toyo R1R and Ecsta XS under extreme performance and Toyo R888 under streetable track & comp tires. These will all run you less money, but are not exactly tires most normal people would put for a street car and won't last as long. Since you only drive it 2k a year, I don't see why you couldn't try it though.

Another vote for the R888's. I have them all the way around and the straight line grip is really good, but they really shine when you push them hard in corners. Great tire for the money.

It's the best $150 tire you're going to find now that the Conti DW is backordered until july or something. I just put some on my car yesterday but haven't driven it yet until I get my alignment later today. Then I can give you more info, as I owned the GS-D3 before these. These are a step down from the GSD3 obviously but they are HALF the price too.

Next to the F1's that I have driven on, the Falken FK452 is pretty good. They dont like the cold one bit, better than the "OLD" F1's, but not nearly as nice as the newer GSD3's. I put a set of the FK452's on mine just last week replacing the older F1's and they are not too bad. Find they really track the road so you really have to pay attention to the wheel. I haven't pushed these hard at all yet, other than a couple of little launches, but it is still too cold here to really try them out and see what they can handle.

I agree about the BFG G-force. It's a fine tire for much less money. They were the original tire that came with my GT/CS and I just replaced them this past Christmas, mostly due to age (6 years and the rubber was definitely getting harder). No complaints, a fine tire. I could have easily replaced them with another set of BFG but I knew what my T/A had with those GS-D3's and I was 'spoiled'. Here is another wrench to throw in your thought process. I ended up getting a set of the new Goodyear Eagle GT for about $900 (18" rims) since they didn't have the GS-D3 in my size at the time. A very aggressive tread design as well. I can't speak for longevity issues yet but this Eagle GT is also very impressive and slightly better than the BFG so far. Whatever you do, don't get cheap unless you have no choice. You might be happy with a cheap tire in the short run but not in the long run as all those issues I mentioned in my other post will come to fruition as the tire ages and wears down. You get what you pay for when it comes to rubber.

I have them on my summer wheels and they are decent (VERY good for the price ) as far as handling/wet grip/etc. goes.

I basically chose them because I still use 16x8 wheels, and there are VERY few decent summer, NON-R compound, 16" tires left for our rides. (At least they make them in 255/50-16, vs. 245. )

IF I had 17s on the car I would have went with the Toyo R1Rs, or something in that treadwear/stickiness/price range for summer street driving.

Toyo R888. It'll destroy anything through the corners and because it's a sticky *** DOT legal tire, it hooks decently even with concrete sidewalls.
