Question anyone had problems with tire age?

so i recently took some tires to a goodyear to have them mounted on my wheel. when i went to pick them up, i noticed one wheel didnt have the tire on it. they said they had a problem getting the other one on the wheel and that chunks of rubber started coming off where it seals.

needless to say they couldnt get it to air up. they blamed it on the tires age and showed me a 08 date on the tire. anyone else have this happen? im kinda feeling like they screwed up and are trying to pass the blame.

Rubber dries out as it gets older, and since it's a used tire it's been subjected to heat as it rolls down the road (which also dries it out), so it doesn't surprise me that it cracked around the bead.

Dry rot is very common. 5 years for a set of tires isn't crazy but if they have been sitting or lived a hard life they will be extra dry rotted. What brand tires were they?

yea its possible for the rubber to have been really stiff and cracked. Seeing how that tire was 5 years old makes it less likely thats the case though. What size tire and wheel was it?

Really depends on the conditions where the tire was stored. If it is cracking or if the rubber was hard around the bead then yes I can see the bead ripping very easy.

10 years is the cut off date on legally mounting a tire but again it depends on the tires history as well.

they are 285 30 19. got them from another member here. he had them in storage, they seemed good. the other tire that was not mounted doesnt seem brittle.

I ran these on the back for about 1yr

my wheels i just got came from a guy who bought the corvette new & put about a 1000 miles on them before getting the same set of rims in chrome. he then put my wheels in the boxes w/the lip protectors on them. so i dont think these damaged the tires.

Sounds like somebody doesn't know how to mount a tires. If they didn't look rotted and you would be able to tell if the tire was rotted at the bead where they tore it. Ive mounted some sketchy looking tires for customers and not once have i ever had one leak unless they were so dried out the air would actually leak thru the cracks in the rubber. if you could shoot some pics of the tire in question. Were the tires identical? between the tires you took?

I agree with the above. I work as a tire tech between classes and I am sure they tried to go too fast and F'ed your tire up. If you can, GLOB some bead sealer on the spot they cut it and it may reseal.

I can't believe a tire tech saying it's ok to use a tire with a damaged bead. There's 2 things you don't half ***, tires and brakes, since they both are the most important things on a car to prevent a serious accident.

Never mount a tire with a damaged bead! Ive never seen one blow out because of a damaged bead but i will personally never mount a defective tire in this case a damaged bead

the tire bead seems soft & plyable, no nicks or chunks taken out of the tire which is identical. this is why i thought goodyear prob screwed up the tire while mounting it. the main question is whether or not the date stamp of 08 means it is too old to use? that is the excuse they are using.

do you tire guys know when a tire is out of date? also, is that date when it was made?

There is a DOT number on the tire. 08 is roughly 5 years old. It is old for a tire but if they got one mounted just fine thats made the same year... They def. screwed up. If i remember correctly the DOT number is 11to 12 number and letters. The last 4 are the build date.

I provide a service. I am not there to tell the customer what is right and what is wrong sir. I will make a suggestion and if he decides to go through with it then it is completely his choice. That also happens more than you think and the customer never gets told by the tech. There is a lot of techs out there that are just there for their check and dont care about others, even more here in a college town.

You shouldn't even suggest that someone should use an unsafe tire, it is your job to tell them what's right or wrong since a lot of people don't know what's unacceptable. If an auto repair shop told a customer that it was ok to drive a car that was unsafe and they got in a bad accident resulting in serious injury or death there will be a lawsuit against them. I sure am glad I don't take my car where you work!

I had the factory tires on my 2002 Formula for 8 years before I got them replaced. They had less than 10,000 miles on them but I was afraid of one of them blowing out. They still looked good, but I didn't want to take a chance.
