I ran nittos for almost two years and loved them when I was bolt ons with stock stall. Now that I'm heads/cam with a 3600 yank they just don't cut it anymore. On the streets I could do 40-45mph mash it and get sideways on 275/50/15 nittos. I now run 255/50/16 m/t drag radials on stock wheels and love them. They hook really well when cold on the streets. So far I've only got two passes in with them, and my 60ft was 1.74 with 20lbs of air in them. I used to pull 1.64-1.67's on 275/50/15 et streets though, but I think if I air them down more they will go 1.66-1.68's. My vote is nittos with your mods, but if you ever want to spray or gets heads/cam then you might want to think about m/t drag radials. I've ran both in the rain, and the nittos are better but not a lot better. I can do 45-50mph in pouring rain on the m/t drag radials before they start to hydroplane.

I just got my 255/50r16 BFG's installed today, I love em. They aren't as sticky as my Nittos and the others but the last set I had went over a year and a half and 10,000 miles.
Its all about learning what the tire can handle @ the track, with my Cobra I finally had it dialed in with a 16psi hot pressure, it would turn 1.7's and I even did a low 1.7 one time. Those were Nitto's though and they wore out alot faster. I wanted a tire that I could drive on not only at the track.
