anyone painted/powdercoated rims black
i have a red z28 with a black hard top.. seen some black painted and riveted z06 wheels that would look good on it.. but i dont wont a 17 inch wheel for draggin purposes... has anyone ever painted or powdercoated there wheels before?? if so what kinda paint ect... i know a buddy who did them on his mustang and they looked great for about a month until he went down a freinds gravel driveway and the rocks starting chipping paint off. I used automotive paint, and primer. Just make sure you rough up the surface with some 400-800 grit sandpaper. Then get some kind of lint free cloth to remove any residue. I like swiffers, because they attract everything. Spray the primer on, and let it dry for about an hour. Once it dries, go over it with your fingers to make sure there aren't any uneven spots. If there are, just lightly sand them out with the same sandpaper and lightly spray the primer on those areas, if they need it. Once the primer is dry, you can spray the paint on. Just spray slowly, and evenly. Take your time and it will turn out good. Here are mine that I just redid today! I got sick of the all black. I thought I would like it, but I was wrong. I think this looks much better!
I almost forgot- make sure you spray clear over the final color, because that will make it strong and more resistant to chips and such!

Jack, I think you made the right choice!
I really think that completely black wheels are hideous. The outer lip just does so much for them and I love that. I noticed that you had some with a really thin outer lip, but from many angles it was hard to tell that it was even there. I think what you've done with the wheels now is just the right combo of it. Did they start as just plain silver ZR1s?
I also have a red Z28 and will be buying black wheels with a polished lip from AFS soon.

Either way, it looks amazing! You're making me contemplate whether I want to simply buy black ZR1s from AFS with the polished lip or buy some normal ones and paint them your way.....

I agree with Joe, powdercoating is definitely the way to go. It may cost a little more but the long term results will be well worth it. I have the TT2's, but powdercoated the enitre center( including the caps) looks unbelievable
