Question BFH Mod

I will need to break out the hammer on this install of 315/35/17 BFG GForce KD's. I just got them mounted on my new 17X11 TTII's, and need to install.

What kind of hammer should I use? Regular, Rubber covered or what??

Any tips or issues you encountered would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Dave

BFH = Big Frickin Hammer

A hammer is used to beat in the inner wheel well when the tire is just a little bit too big and rubs. Most people who go to 17X11 rear wheels with 315/35-17 tires and have a lowered car, need to beat in the inner fender well. I'm just wondering what kind of hammer to use... as my wheels and tires are ready to be mounted.

I used a sledge hammer. Worked good. I don't think you would be able to accomplish anything with a rubber mallet.

I used a 3lb metal sledge hammer when I did mine today.

Just don't miss! Then you could spray some rubberized rust protector on the spots where you smash up. This isn't any sort of delicate task

Yeah I see exactly where I need to BFH the inner fender well now. I did a test fit. Looks like it's about a 4x4 inch area right behind the brake caliper.

The good news is I don't think I will have to roll my fenders. I got about 3in of clearance between the tire and the fender lip.

looks like you didn't pick a very good offset...

17x11 with a 50mm offset is the only offset that will not bulge out past the fender. With the 56mm offset you will most likely have to roll the fender lips.

I used a sledge too, I tried just a normal hammer and a mallet and nothing worked. The sledge worked really well and it didn't take much hammering

You have it backwards. The higher offset moves the wheel closer to the inner fender. The TTII's have a 46mm offset which will stick out a little more then the 50mm ZR1.

The 46 offset is the recommended offset from American Racing.

OK so I beat the **** out of my inner fender well, and I have good clearance. I think I will be able to get away without rolling the fenders.... but just in case... anyone know a place that will roll my fenders in the Chicago area??? Also.. what should I use to recover the fender well?

Thanks,
Dave

some black undercoating will hide all the beating you did.

Is it possible to beat it too much I mean too much of one good thing can turn out to be bad right? What would be the best offset for a 18X11 wheel with 315's if you want it to just clear the fender lip on a TA that is lowered?

I don't think you could beat it too much. You will know when it is enough. I thought I beat mine in enough and after a week I noticed that it was still scraping in a few spots so I beat it again and made sure it was enough.

Depending on offset, maybe. But I also have never heard of a 305 series tire for a 17" diameter wheel.
