both tires are the same width : 245. the first tire goes on a 15 inch rim, the second goes on a 16 inch rim.

The 245 is the section width which is the widest part of the tire (the sidewall). Even though both are 245, the 16" will probably have a wider tread pattern.

doubtful since they both have the same aspect ratio (sidewall height)

They have the same aspect ratio, but the 16" wheel demands a more square shouldered, higher performance tire. So yes, the tread pattern will definitely be wider on the 245/50/16.

I wouldn't think that it would.

Oh, I didn't notice that. If they are both 50 series then the 15" will be a shorter tire.

Most people always want to keep the stock height.

The 245/50/15 will be a full inch shorter and Tire Rack only shows one street tire in that size, the Dunlop SP Sport 8000.

In this case they would be about the same tread and everything.

when reading tire sizes the first number, 245 ,is the width of the tread in mm.so 245mm is close to 10".the second number is the side wall height.so with 50,the side wall is 50% of the tread width and a 40 would be 40% of the tread width.and the last is the rim size.
so in your case a 245/50/15 and a 245/50/16 will be the same width and same side wall height, thats if they are on the same width sized rim.but the 16" tire will be taller because of the rim height.

That's not quite right. Close.

The 245 is the SECTION WIDTH not tread. Tread width is irrelevant. The section width is the widest part of the tire which is almost always going to be the sidewall as it sticks out the most.

The 50 is the aspect ratio. It is the ratio of the sidwall height and section width. 50% of 245mm is about 122mm. That is the sidewall height. From the rim to the ground (not taking into effect the cars weight) is going to be about 122mm = 4.88".

From these numbers you can determine the overall height. You take the sidewall height and multiply by 2 and then add the rim height.

4.88
4.88
+16
=25.76

See how that works? if you plug in a 15" rim you get this.

4.88
4.88
+15
=24.76
