Default sidewall ?

just thought of something... people say that 18's dont hook because of a smaller sidewall.

say i got 17x11's and put a 315/35/17 tire

wouldnt the sidewall be just as tall as a 285/35/18??? both the aspect ratios are the same... so i dont get the concept of 18's not hooking like 17's.

Sidewall is Tire width X aspect ratio.

315/35-17... Sidewall is 315 X .35 = 110.25mm = 4.34in
285/35-18... Sidewall is 285 X .35 = 99.75mm = 3.92in

That 18 incher has almost 1/2 inch less sidewall.

The sidewall series has nothing to do with actual height. 35 is the percentage of the width that the sidewall height is. A 17" will have a taller sidewall than an 18" with the same overall height. Your diameter is the same and the wheel gets larger so the sidewall has to be shorter. More sidewall gives more cushion to push down on the tire and get traction.
