Default clear coat/primer types?

Ive read threads about clear coats. Im going to paint and polish some parts of my wheel. Has anyone used clear coat from a can? Ive heard it really dulls, but dont want to spend the money for zoop sealer. Whats a good kind of clear coat? Also what does everyone use for a primer? Also where can you get the products at? Is everyone that is painting their wheels using paint from a spray can or are you all doing them by air brush? I want to do it with spray can, but I dont want it to look like crap though. Someone have a pic of a spray can painted and spray clear coated wheels? Thanks for any info.

I'm also about to paint and some wheels, ZR-1s. I'm using the original paint as primer, which I don't know if yours are painted or not. I've been using Aluminum Oxide to get rid of some curb rash and I'm gonna go to the highest grit of that stuff as they have. Then I've heard of some stuff call Micromesh that you can use for polishing metals. Supposedly it works really well. I don't know where to get it, but you might try looking for it. Hopefully this well help. Let me know if you end up using spray or not, I'm still trying to decide on what to use on mine.

I found some 2000 grit at advance auto.

Yes, I have the silver painted 10 spoke wheels.

I decided to spray. Got some at advane auto. I got all dupli-color paints. Got a sandable primer, primer sealer, acrylic lacquer gloss black paint, clear effex glitter and finaly a clear coat.

Puttin them all on in that order and hope it turnes out good.

What are you doin to your wheels exactly?

Ill have to check out that micorfiber thanks. I dont know if im going to do some polishing yet or not. Im either leavin some parts the stock silver paint or polish.

Either way im fixin to paint one tonight and ill post up a pic if you like when im done. Acutally it just started to rain, never mind that thought

Man, this is more time consuming than I thought it would be. Takes 1.5 hours alone taping it up (just one wheel) much less the time it takes to sand down the stock paint finish...

I just put my first coat of primer on. Its sandable primer thats supposed to fill in small scratches and stuff. Now that I put it on I do notice alot of scrates from sanding down the stock paint. Its prolly gonna take a lot of coats to fill it in.

Anyone think I can just skip the sanding on the other wheels and just spray on the primer? Just dont know if it will hold up or not? I might have just gone a little too overboard with the sanding on this wheel.

Well on mine, I'm going to clean up the curb rash, polish the flat part next to the tire bead on the lip, then paint everything else either black or gunmetal. I've already spent about 6 hours on two wheels just getting the rash off and some of the paint. I'm just sanding the rest of the paint and leaving it as primer. Then I'm going to have to repaint the center caps and get new bowtie decals.

Yea, ive spent 2 days now on just one wheel. I put on 3 coats of sandable primer, 3 coats of primer sealent then I just put on i think the 4th or 5th coat of black paint. Gonna let it dry for an hour and put a coat of metal flakes on and then put on the clear coat. It sucks its soo humid out down here, I spray outside and bring it inside to dry though. Im hoping to get it finished by dark or else ill have to finish tomorrow, but im not going to rush it.

What do you mean your leaving the paint as the primer?

I'm just using the old paint as primer, all I'm doing is scuffing it up with some 400 and 800 grit. That way I don't have to go all the way down to the metal and put on new primer.

Ok, big problem. Im finished painting but when I went to put the clear coat on, I did one squirt and stopped--its makin my black paint look grey/white. Its not totally clear. I take it thats what people mean when they say clear is hazy? Is it 100% necessary to do a clear coat? I dont think im going to anymore, repaint the part I did the clear on. What do you think?

Never mind, it just had to dry, all is good. I just flipped cuz I wasnt expecting to see that and with all the time and effort I put into it and I ruin it at the last step was gonna tick me off. But is good. Gonna go put the last 2 clear coats on now.

You can see my before and after pic. Should I leave the spokes silver or should I polish them? What do you think of the paint job?

Took me 2 days to do the one, but I think it turned out alright, not perfect, but for spray paint and someone thats never painted before...

Yeah I had the same problem with the clear from a spray can when I painted my calipers a few weeks ago; just freaks you out at first. I think they look bad *** too. If I were you I'd leave the spokes silver, I think they look good like that.
