555s on rear, fronts?
hey i go to the strip about once or twice a year and its a summer car, wouldnt it make sense to get nitto 555s on the rear and then sum cheap tire on the front seeing as fronts hardly matter? or do they? im thinking nitto 55s for sure but i hear they donot last long. someone told me the nitto 450s are good and hook well, but thats on a 5.0, good for my car?

I had a set of Nitto 555R drag radials and they worked good for me at the track (bolt on A4 with stock stall). Also had decent treadwear for a radial. If you do not want a drag radial, get matching goodyear gs-d3s front and back (great tires). I have always been a fan of matching tires myself, so when i had goodyear gs-d3s up front and nitto 555r's in the back, it drove me nuts just looking at it.

I was thinking about this too. I used to have the r's in the back, but the road race spec rIIs in the front. I thought it was decent handling for the street, but you could tell that it was stiff up front (stiff sidewall) and kind of sloppy in the rear with the soft sidewalled drags during hard turns.
It wasn't like it was dangerous or anything, but I can definantly tell the differance now thatg I'm running rIIs on all 4 corners.

the 555 will go more than 20000 miles on the front and still have great tread..and I have never had a problem with them in the front...or the back for that matter..Just bought some 285/35/18..new set for $400 even..hee hee

"The handling combo of 555r's in back and regular 555 up front sucks though.
Why is that?"
Because the back is sticky and the front is not; you get severe push in hard (autox, rr) situations. On the street it's 100% fine, you're not testing the limits of the car.
The best is RII's on the street on all 4 corners, you stick like glue.

My street tires now are Kumho Ecsta 712's up front and Nitto 555's out back, since I can't afford to get another RII set at the moment..

I have the RII's out back and hankooks up front. The RIIs hook good for me at the track and I don't have to deal with a soft sidewall...thats why I didnt worry too much about the fronts. I don't do any autox/rr but the car handles fine on the streets. They obvioulsy look a lot different but nobody has even noticed the different tread.

The 555's and 555RII's were pretty decent in the rain, in fact, I heard horror stories from people spinning out with 555R's on the highway when it was raining which made me very cautious when I first drove in the rain with the RII's, but they didn't hydroplane any more than normal tires and felt quite stable.
The 555's are better in the rain since they are a normal everyday street tire with smaller tread blocks and more water channels than the R and RII.
here is my 555,
and the RII,
