Is the BFG DR actually wider than the Nitto 555R, even though both are 315/35/17 tires? I don't have my old Nitto to compare.

Yes, nitto's run small. The 315 is actual tire width, instead of the more popular tread width reading..

The bfg's are wiiiiiiide. Mine measure a little over 12.5" sidewall to sidewall.

From somebody that has had BFG and Goodyear gs d3s. The gs d3 is wider by a whole lot.

Really? Can you measure both? Are we talking about BFG KD? I currently have Yokohama AVS Sports on the back and the KD in the front. I'll be switching to the KD in the back fairly soon, and I am wondering how they compare to the Yokos. Hope I don't have to do any more fender banging.

^^ Your tires look about as wide as my 315 KD's, If I can find my tape measure I'll go measure my KD's, I know when I got them on the wheels though I measured them and I'm 90% sure they were 12.5 in across mounted with 30 PSI.
