285's almost as wide as some 315's?
Would a nitto 285/40/17 555 radial tire be almost as wide as a 315 sumitomo? I am asking because this may be my solution to wanting a relatively wide tire yet being able to lower the car without any body modifications.

i have some cheap 285's on my 11's right now and they look damn close to the sumotomos on my other set of 11's. if you are trying to compare them to a "real" then they will be narrower, for example a goodyear DS-G3 will be inches wider. not really but seriously about an inch

Everything Nitto makes is much more narrow than advertised. That's why you will see some people claiming you can fit a 315 Nitto DR on a 9 or 9.5" wide wheel. Of course you can! It's only a 285 or 295 at best. Sit a 315 Nitto and a 285 BFG right next to each other and look how close in size they are. Nitto has always notoriously run a bit on the narrow side of what they are advertising.
