Default Skinnies up front

Just wondering if the traditional skinny tire up front is more beneficial than just a skinny no name street tire of equal height and size. I'm thinking the difference in tread may have an effect or does it? Fixing to buy 15x4 drag stars and I think the price of the a skinny race tire is high for no more than what it will be used for. All answers and suggestions welcome and appreciated.
