Default Torque Thrust M offset/back spacing questions

I want to run 245/45/17 fronts and 315/35/17 rears on my 98' SS. I found them a Summit Racing. Here are the measurements:

Rim Diameter (in): 17 in.
Rim Width (in): 10.50 in.
Backspacing (in): 7.500 in.
Offset (mm): +44.00mm

Rim Diameter (in): 17 in.
Rim Width (in): 8.00 in.
Backspacing (in): 4.500 in.
Offset (mm): +44.00mm

I'm a little confused when it comes to offset. I know from reading other posts that the 17x10.5's need +44mm offset, but how about the 17x8's? I see that they have the same +44mm offsetas the 17x10.5's. I know everyone is going to try and sway me towards sticking with the 17x9.5 fronts, but I like the skinnier front tire look.

Can someone elaborate on explaining to me the whole offset thing?

THANKS!!

Those will fit fine. The front may be tucked in a little bit.
