Default Paint or powdercoat wheels?

I'm going to be getting some ZR1's and I want them white. The question is do I have them painted or powdercoated? What are the pros and cons?

I don't know a lot about powdercoating as far as durability. I've heard that powdercoating can weaken the metal in the wheels because they have to be baked but I dunno if there's any truth to that.

I don't think they would. People powdercoat frames on atv's, motocross bikes. street bikes, and cars. Don't see how it would make it much weaker. Powdercoat is extremely durable as well. You could probably paint them cheaper than powdercoating them though. But i don't think either way would be bad. I painted my SS 10 spokes with some nice duplicolor rattle cans, and they turned out great. Did all 4 for about 25 bucks.

I would powdercoat them for durability and would be worried about them chipping easily if painted.

It's going to run between $350-400 for powdercoating. I can certainly get them painted for less but it's the durability I'm worried about.

You could always buy yourself a powder coater for $150 or so and coat them yourself. It's not hard to do. Plus you can powder coat other things on your car because now you have a powder coater. If you get dirt in your coat you can wet sand and buff it just like body panels. I bought one and it's addictive!Btw I got an oven off of Craigs list for free.

if durability is your main concern, powdercoating is definitely the way to go.

just make friends with someone who does powdercoating to help offset the cost....

Do it right the 1st time and powder coat them. If the person powder coating knows what they are doing then it will be a lot more durable than paint. My wheels have been powder coated for years now and still look great.

My wheels used to be painted with Duplicolor. I got tired of imperfections and chips so I finally got them powder coated Black Chrome. Its like a night and day difference. I had them done cheap at my buddys shop.

I was quoted 250.00 for all 4 wheels to get them powder coated to black from chrome in AZ.

powder coating is a lot more reliable and they will last a long time.
