Default GTO spare tire/rim

I went to the drag strip with a pair of 2006 GTO spare tires on the front of my C5 to test how "skinnies" would work before buying anything. The track "management" would not let me run with them, and told me it was "their" decision and that is it! While I have not seen it first hand, friends who have C5's (running in the 9's own these wheel/tire combo and let me borrow them) told me they see GTO's running all the time at the same track and they are running the same and slower ET's as me. I have not tried another track, but has anybody else had this issue, and if so, was it the tires only or both the rim and tire being as the rim also states "Temporary use" on them?

17" or 18" spares?

i would hazard a guess the problem is the tyre. Mickey Thompson make an 18" Sportsman tyre which should get past the officials. If they are 17"s there is another tyre you can run, i forget atm.

were you running the stock tires ?

If so, that is your problem, you must replace them.

What a lot of people do is sand down all of the writing on the spokes, and get them repowdercoated a different color, to help avoid issues like this.

Those tires have a maximum speed of like 40 mph dont they? I wouldn't have let you use them either.

I've run those spare wheels/tyres (at 130mph) they have nil issues at the track. I think the speed rating has more to do with the fact the skinny width affects safe cornering speed - which of course isnt an issue for 1/4 mile action. Anyway grab a set of the m/t's or similar and you should be ok.
