This article applies to the Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1990-2002).

If you've ever dealt with a burnt out or dying interior light, you know firsthand how hard it can be looking for dropped cash in middle of the night at a highway toll. Even as annoying as this is, many of us choose to just deal with the dim lighting. Instead of just settling with the problem, we suggest you look to install better and brighter light options. LED lights are available in different colors, last longer and are brighter than stock counterparts. More importantly, these lights are very easy to install into the cabin of your vehicle.

Materials Needed

  • LED bulbs
  • Flathead screwdriver

You can also install additional LED strips in the foot wells for more lighting; see Step 3 for more details.

Step 1 – Remove the light covers

Look up and locate the tabs on each of the dome/map light covers. Take your screwdriver and gently pry off each cover. With the covers off you will be able to grab and remove the old bulbs.

Pro Tip

Some people have reported having issues remove the map light bulb from its socket. In these cases you can place a plate under and break the bulb off. Just be careful not to ruin the light housing or socket.

Step 2 – Install the LED bulbs

One of the coolest things about this install is how these bright bulbs use the same sockets as the older lights. With the older bulbs removed from their sockets, install the LED lights.

Step 3 – Install LED strips (optional)

LED strips are an aftermarket accessory that can easily mount anywhere onto your cabin. It is a bit more complicated to wire than just replacing the bulbs, but still very easy to do.

  • Locate a place to mount the LED strip module.
  • Hide the wires for the module into the interior trim.
  • Remove the lower steering and passenger bezel.
  • Install each lighting assembly into the left and right bezels and zip-tie them in place.
  • Ground the LED module.
  • Connect the module to the interior fuse panel.
  • Test the lights.
