Camaro and Firebird: How to Replace Spark Plug Wires

A bad spark plug wire can cause problems for your spark plugs and your ignition coils, so it's important that you replace them semi-regularly. This article will show you how.

This article applies to the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird (1990-2002).

Your spark plug wires are just as important as the spark plugs themselves. Although you won't have to replace them as often, you should replace them once every three to four times you replace regular copper spark plugs, or at about 70 to 100 thousand miles unless it fails before that. Misfires and visible electrical sparks emanating from the wires are a sure sign that a spark plug wire is failing. Replacing your spark plug wires is easy, and mostly hassle-free.

Materials Needed

  • Replacement spark plug wires
  • Ratchet with socket set
  • Dielectric grease

Step 1 – Remove the old spark plug wire

Whenever you're working on something electrical you should first disconnect the negative (black) battery terminal. The spark plug wires connect your ignition coils to the spark plugs, so if you find the coils, you'll find the spark plug wires. Remove the spark plug wire by pulling out the boot attached to the spark plug, then disconnect the other end of the wire from the ignition coil. If you're having trouble reaching the spark plug wires, try unbolting the air pipe. It's held down by a pair of bolts at either end of the pipe. Removing it should give you enough room to work with.

Step 2 – Install new spark plug wire

Take your replacement spark plug wire and apply dielectric grease to both ends of the wire. This will help protect the spark plug and the ignition coil. Dielectric should be reapplied somewhat regularly. When installing the wire, start by inserting the boot to the spark plug. Make sure that it fits in snug. Then connect the other end to the ignition coil. Repeat these steps for the other spark plug wires. It's important to remember to change only one spark plug wire at a time, especially on LT engines where the wires are different lengths. When you're finished, reconnect the battery and test the ignition to ensure you're getting a proper spark from the spark plugs.
